It is also possible to do the same thing with missions. Can you imagine paying someone to obey God for you? Instead of doing evangelism you simply write a check and have someone else spread the gospel. Like the dog needs to be walked… the gospel needs to be proclaimed. Someone must do it. In an affluent culture it is easier to just pay someone to do it for you.
It is fine to outsource cutting the lawn and cleaning the carpets. But a church can’t really just employ others to fulfill the Great Commission. To a certain extent, that is necessary when it involves international ministry. Not everyone can live in Africa or Asia and still be part of the church back home. But the Great Commission is not just for “over there.” It also applies to the church’s neighborhood. It applies to your neighborhood. While you may employ missionaries to do the international part… the local part is yours.
