THE GREAT COMMISSION WOULD BE EASY, EXCEPT….

s0105150_sc7It would be simple if the Great Commission just involved evangelism. We could just “hit and run.”

Jesus said to “make disciples” all over the world (Matthew 28:19-20). His explanation of “making disciples” is that we are to “teach them to do all things” He commanded us. That definition of discipleship takes it to an entirely new level. It is one thing to evangelize. It is entirely different to make disciples.

The bar is even higher than it appears at first glance. Jesus didn’t say “teach all things.” He inserted that little word “do.” That word makes an incredible difference. It is easy to tell someone what to do; it is entirely different to coach them until they are doing it. Our job is not finished until we have helped new believers put into practice all the things Christians are supposed to do. It is not enough to just have a class. We are to be engaged with them long enough to make sure they are actually doing it.

That means the missionary cannot complete his job in one easy step. This cannot be done on a short-term trip. It won’t be accomplished in three easy lessons. This means there is still the need for missionaries with a long-term commitment
