What’s the issue?

ID-10026072The receptionist at the gym asked me what I thought about their music. They were taking a survey of their members to evaluate what kind of music we wanted.

The truth is that some of it is raunchy. Not the kind of music I would listen to. At that moment I had a decision to make. I could either criticize it as “devil music.” Or… what I did was simply say: “I have my own ipod and listen to my own music.”

Some might argue that I should have taken the opportunity to “fix” the bad music in our gym. My over-riding agenda however is to evangelize the receptionist. Raunchy music is a symptom, not the root of the problem. To focus on the music would have distracted from the real problem… the receptionist’s salvation.

People sin because they are sinners. We should not be surprised. They simply do what sinners do. But the root problem is not the individual sins they commit. The problem is a heart that is not in tune with God. Sort out their relationship to God and the rest of it will take care of itself. Evangelism should be aimed at the root, not whacking off branches.
