There is one critical concept that makes all the difference as to whether we evangelize or not. If this isn’t true, then we are wasting our time. Missionaries and evangelists are on a fool’s errand. There is no need to present the gospel to anyone.
That one principle is that there is that there is only one way to God. Jesus said: “I am the way, the truth and the life, no man comes to the father but by me.” He was either arrogant or factual when He made that statement. If he is right, then there is all the motivation in the world to spread the gospel. If He was wrong, then forget it.
Jesus was not coming up with something new. That same principle was emphasized in the Old Testament: “I, I am the LORD, and besides me there is no savior” (Isaiah 43:11). It is repeated in Isaiah 45:6: “that people may know, from the rising of the sun and from the west, that there is none besides me; I am the LORD, and there is no other.” The exclusivity of the path to God is a driving force in evangelism.
That means one of the first things to do in training people for evangelism is to settle that issue. If a person does not believe that Jesus is the only way, then there is no need to proceed with further training in evangelism. This is a foundational, seminal starting point for anyone who is going to spread the gospel.
