Imagine you are standing in line at an airport, getting ready to get on the plane. The person behind you starts talking about their fear of flying. Then they come right out and asks you… “could you tell me how to get to heaven if this plane does not make it?”
Could you do it? Would you be able to clearly give the gospel in the next three minutes before boarding? Would you know how to explain salvation with such clarity that a person would understand?
One of the reasons for lack of evangelism is simply because people do not know how to evangelize. They don’t know what to say. The solution to that dilemma is quite simple. People won’t do something they don’t know how to do. There is a simple fix. Train people in what to say. Every Christian should be able to give the gospel if asked.
There are many resources available to help churches train members in evangelism. BMW has one of them. Fostering the Harvest is a training resource that will motivate and equip people to reach out to non-believers. This is a tool to use in a small group or Sunday School. A master teacher delivers the content in a 20 minute presentation on DVD. Then the facilitator helps the group to discuss the material and guide application. Every person in your church should go through this course or something similar. A church that wants to see everyone doing evangelism should have regular ongoing training for anyone who joins the church. It should be a required course for every member.
This is really simple: Don’t ask people to do something unless you have trained them to do it.
