tree“If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?”

Perhaps another way to say this is: “If you are talking and no one can understand, are you communicating?”

As I write this blog, I’m in another country and several houses away they are having an “evangelistic meeting.” The loudspeaker system in their garage is blasting their preaching and music into the neighborhood in their version of evangelism. It is so loud that it is obnoxious. The neighbors have to forget about TV or conversation.

Yes, we could hear them but I wonder how many neighbors really “heard” them. They heard the noise, but did communication take place? Sometimes our method of communication distorts the message. For some of us it may not be volume. Maybe it is quirks in our personality. Maybe it is our poor communication skills. Maybe it is our obnoxious personality. Perhaps it is our hypocrisy.

It is difficult to be totally self-aware, but we at least need to consider that we might not be making a good “sound.”
