Paul told Timothy to “do the work of an evangelist.” Perhaps he meant that Timothy should go out and give the gospel to some people. That would be good. But was that really what Paul was instructing Timothy to do?
There is only one place where the “work of an evangelist” is described. Ephesians 4:11-12 says the Evangelist’s job is to train other people to do evangelism. The Evangelist does not do evangelism because he is an evangelist. He does evangelism because he is a Christian. The work of an evangelist is equpping others to do the same. It is every Christian’s job to do evangelism. But we need the evangelist as a specialists to model, enthuse and equip the rest of us to do the job.
Some people have the idea that an evangelist is someone who travels from church to church, holding a series of meetings where he preaches evangelistic sermons. An evangelist might be itinerant but should only move on once he has trained others to do evangelism. An evangelist might preach some evangelistic sermons, but that is not his main job. He must be training others to also evangelize.
Evangelists… your main job is not evangelism. Your main job is equipping and motivating the rest of us to do evangelism.
