eatYou have two of the most basic skills needed to do evangelism: eating and talking. It really is that simple. You know how to eat and you know how to talk.

Jesus used meals as a way to connect with lost people:

-Luke 5:29 Matthew invited his friends to a dinner party to meet Jesus
-John 2:1-11 Jesus performed His first miracle at a wedding where they were eating and drinking
-Lk 15:2 And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled, saying, “This man receives sinners and eats with them.”
-Matthew 11:19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.”
-Matthew 9:11 And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
-Luke 19:7 And when they saw it, they all grumbled, “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.”

Jesus used social engagements to connect with people. There is something about eating together that changes the dynamic of conversations. Whereas some people are comfortable walking up to a stranger and giving the gospel, many would be intimidated by the approach. Sitting down for a cup of coffee or meal may be an easier way to enter a conversation. It is certainly very natural and you already know how to eat and talk. Meeting someone for coffee or a meal gives you another activity to help break the ice. Having coffee before or after a church service seems to change the atmosphere where people will listen if they can hide behind a mug of steaming brew.

So do it like Jesus… get together with someone to eat and talk.
