Churches grow in two ways: (1) transfer growth, and (2) conversion growth. They will increase either by Christians coming from other churches or by people becoming Christians. The majority of church growth in America is by transfer growth which is basically people moving from one church to the next. There are obviously valid reasons for a believer to transfer to your church but ultimately, the desired growth for a church should come by evangelism.
Want to test your church’s evangelistic health to see whether you are making new disciples of Christ? Ask for a show of hands in answer to two questions on a Sunday morning:
- “How many of you were led to Christ by someone in this congregation?
- “How many of you have been a believer less than five years?”
