Playing on a gold mine

Crown Mines, shaft #14, ten minutes from our house, was the most productive gold mine in the world in the 1970s. When the price dropped below $380/oz., they closed the mine and made it into a gold-themed amusement park named “Gold Reef City.” They said years ago they would re-open the shaft if gold reached $750/oz. again.

We were there a couple of weeks ago. Even though gold is at $1639/oz., they haven’t re-opened the mine because the amusement park is making so much money. Interesting. They are finding greater satisfaction with amusements on the surface, than with the hard work of digging for gold down deep.

The same seems to apply to people in Western culture when it comes to finding wisdom and truth (and doing the hard work of evangelism). Be a digger!
