The most exciting part about being a chaplain with the Iowa State Patrol is not driving fast on ride-a-longs, arresting drunk drivers, MILO training, or even shooting my Glock (which I heartily enjoy by the way!). The single most exciting, most fulfilling, most rewarding part of being a chaplain is sitting alongside the highway with one of my Troopers on a dull night when there is nothing “exciting” happening, which I have done many times.
On just such a night I sat with a Trooper for whom I had prayed for more than a year. We talked about politics, marriage, family, and even church. Eventually our conversation became very personal and spiritual. It was on that boring night that my friend came to know Christ! Is there anything more exciting, more fulfilling, or more rewarding than leading another soul to the Savior?!
Chaplaincy gives me the opportunity to connect with people that I would never have the opportunity to connect with. How are you connecting with people outside of your church? Who are you having Gospel-conversations with this week?
